OneTerminal TMS Customer Profile: Satellite

Satisfying Demanding Customers with OneTerminal TMS
Satellite Air-Land Motor Service is a leading local cartage firm in the Chicago area with a specialty in air freight. Much of Satellite’s business goes through nearby O’Hare International Airport. Satellite recently added TSA screening as a value-added service for its customers’ export shipments. A family-owned business with a state-of-the-art facility in Wood Dale, Illinois, Satellite has 25 docks, 37 trucks and 33 drivers.

Satellite has used OneTerminal TMS since 2007. Satellite has seen particular benefit from OneTerminal’s rating and document imaging capabilities and from OneTerminal’s integration with their existing GPS service.

Local Rating in Seconds: A Competitive Advantage
“You know how local cartage work has pricing all over the place? It’s just the way it is,” says Joseph Farella, managing partner at Satellite. “We all remember how much staff time it used to take to flip through the huge rate book. Even then, we made mistakes.”

Using OneTerminal TMS, Satellite provides rating to its customers instantly. Satellite is more efficient and profitable since it eliminated rating by hand. “OneTerminal TMS makes it really fast to do all kinds of rates,” Farella continues. “That saves money and gets us more orders. I haven’t seen anything that does rating for local trucking as fast or as well as OneTerminal TMS. It’s a no-brainer.”

OneTerminal TMS has made it easy for Satellite to include its new TSA screening service in the rate tables. Satellite has simply added TSA as an Accessorial charge. Accessorial charges are completely customizable in OneTerminal TMS and include options such as fuel surcharges, inside delivery, hazmat (sorted by class), liftgate, a run to the downtown area, mileage, and overtime.

Satellite now quickly calculates rates using ACI zones. Satellite also has instant access to its rates for hundredweight, skids, cubes, hours, truckload, and gallons. An unlimited number of variations are possible for a specific customer or specific order. Satellite can even provide a special rate for a specific recurring one-way run for a single customer.

Document Images over the Web
OneTerminal TMS is a key component of Satellite’s customer service. Through OneTerminal’s document-imaging and retrieval capabilities, Satellite’s customers have 24/7 Web-based access to POD and other documents.

Satellite’s employees have seen a large drop in phone calls asking, “Is it there yet?” and “Who signed for it?” On their own, Satellite’s customers retrieve POD information and download imaged documents, eliminating burdensome phone calls that Satellite’s employees used to handle. OneTerminal TMS feeds this information to Satellite’s website at regular intervals.

Anyone with permission can log into Satellite’s website. Real-time order status and POD documents are available for viewing or downloading in seconds, while administrator-level customers also have access to invoicing information.

Real-Time GPS Information for Customers and Staff
Satellite uses OneTerminal TMS to get real-time GPS information about truck location and order status. Drivers use their Web-enabled smartphones to enter information about a delivery, including POD.  OneTerminal TMS pulls that status information into its database, where it is instantly available system-wide. “The integration between the GPS and OneTerminal is great,” says Scott Stevens, Satellite’s administrative manager.

There’s a side benefit to GPS integration. Satellite has seen a significant drop in drivers straying from assigned routes. “Our drivers know that someone’s watching where they are,” he says. Drivers stay on track as a result, and customers appreciate knowing that their deliveries are being monitored automatically.

Going Paperless: “It’s Dummy Proof”
Satellite’s employees are sold on OneTerminal’s ease of use. “Looking at orders in OneTerminal TMS is a lot easier than everyone looking at handwritten notes,” says Joseph Farella. “The screens are very nice. Input is easy. It’s dummy proof.” Because they can do so much from single screens, Farella and his colleagues save time. “It’s all right there. You can manage lots of information in one place—documents, messages about a particular stop, a note to the driver that you have to call before pickup, things like that.”

About OneTerminal TMS
For local trucking owners and GMs who are dissatisfied with software designed for regional and national trucking, OneTerminal TMS is enterprise software created specifically to serve local trucking, cartage, P&D, and air-freight operations. OneTerminal TMS automatically computes rates, tracks orders, captures POD, manages accessorials and detention, creates invoices and monitors receivables. Unlike TMW, Profit Tools and Prophecy, OneTerminal TMS provides a system optimized for local trucking, including GPS and EDI interfaces, customer web portal, document scanning, and integration with QuickBooks. In-house and hosted services are available.
