OneTerminal TMS Customer Profile: B&H Systems

A $5M Cartage Operation with an Office Staff of 5
B&H Systems is a leading cartage operation in the Chicago area. In addition to local P&D business, B&H has a number of specialties including emergency same-day deliveries, hazardous materials, liftgate and inside delivery. B&H has a 45,000 sq. ft. terminal with 13 docks, 42 drivers, 46 power units—and a fulltime staff of only 5 people, including dispatch, H/R, truck maintenance, and related functions. B&H attributes its success directly to OneTerminal TMS.

Revenue and Profitability Doubled with JSY Cartage Software
Since implementing OneTerminal TMS in 2006, B&H has increased business, lowered operating costs and doubled profitability. Renee’ Ferris, General Manager B&H, says, “The single best business decision in our company’s 23 years was to put OneTerminal TMS at the center of our operations. Somebody finally figured out a TMS package just for cartage. OneTerminal is the solution we were looking for.”

Local Rates Computed Instantly
While customized rating is vital to cartage, it is typically a time-consuming task to come up with the actual rates. Using OneTerminal TMS, B&H has slashed the time it takes to calculate rates. OneTerminal TMS quickly calculates rates by hundredweight, skids, cubes, hours, truckload, and volume. An unlimited number of variations are possible for a specific customer or specific order—even a specifically quoted, recurring one-way run for a single customer.

B&H no longer has a need for specialized employees who do rates. B&H’s Ferris notes, “With OneTerminal TMS, we can quickly quote any job. The accessorials and extensive fuel surcharge options are right in the software. It’s just so easy now. We don’t have to spend all that time on rates any more. Even if it’s a custom quote, we always know what to invoice, and we do that from within the software, too. It’s a huge time-saver.”

Keeping Drivers on the Move
B&H employees create orders quickly in OneTerminal TMS. The easy order entry screen in OneTerminal TMS captures weight, pallets/skids, and cubes, as well as hazmat totals by class. Any must-see information for the driver or dispatcher goes into the order, such as “Short time window” or “Must call for appointment.” OneTerminal TMS prints up to four lines of text directly on the paperwork. “We never had this much detail on our bills before,” says B&H’s Noelle Viola. “Drivers waste very little time waiting around, so more orders get done each day.”

Software that Works the Way Cartage Works
Frank Farrell is the early-AM dispatcher at B&H. He adds orders to new manifests by either scanning the bar-coded tickets or using “drag-and-drop.” He says, “My job is to make efficient routes that maximize profitability. I also need to keep each customer’s specific needs in mind, because we have very high standards for customer service. OneTerminal TMS has had a huge positive impact on our ability to get all the details right for every order.”

OneTerminal TMS treats pickup and delivery as separate actions, giving B&H complete flexibility to assign any job to any driver on any day. Farrell says, “Why force an order to go with a particular driver? I can assign anyone a pickup or delivery based on my judgment. With OneTerminal TMS, we complete more orders than before and our drivers finish earlier. Our drivers spend almost no time waiting and more time earning us money.” Farrell finalizes each run in OneTerminal TMS and prints loading instructions and driver manifests. He adds, “OneTerminal TMS allows us to give drivers credit for pickups as well as deliveries. Drivers appreciate that.”

Better Compliance, Quiet Office
When dispatchers enter a driver’s actual arrival and departure times onto the manifest, OneTerminal TMS provides total cargo real-time updates by weight, floor space, and hazmat class. OneTerminal TMS automatically sends a message to the driver when placarding needs to change. Dispatcher Frank Farrell notes, “We do a lot of local hazmat. Our placarding rocks. We might get pulled over like anyone, but we never have to pay for violations any more.”

OneTerminal TMS keeps the noise level down at B&H. General manager Renee’ Ferris says, “For the amount of business we do, our phones are really quiet. Our customers are going online to see delivery status and POD documents. My dispatchers can see the whole fleet—so they don’t spend that much time talking to drivers.”

Easy to Use, Powerful Results
The employees at B&H like using the intuitive screens in OneTerminal TMS, which are designed to resemble Outlook and therefore felt familiar to the staff from the very start. OneTerminal TMS makes it easy to see essential information all in one place. Noelle Viola at B&H says, “You don’t have to keep jumping in and out of the software. I can do most of my job right here.”

Using OneTerminal TMS, anyone can quickly view and create orders, customers, manifests, stops, and more. Administrative levels help to manage who gets to see what. Renee’ Ferris, B&H general manager, adds, “OneTerminal TMS was easy for me and my staff to learn. I didn’t even get any of the formal training, and I was up and running in no time.”

Ferris believes that OneTerminal TMS would benefit LTL firms and private fleets in addition to cartage firms. She says, “I wanted an enterprise solution, but I was nervous about having to shoehorn my cartage operation into software that really wasn’t designed for the cartage business. We looked at over 15 other programs and were relieved when OneTerminal TMS came along. The results of investing in OneTerminal have exceeded our expectations. I recommend OneTerminal TMS to any local operation that wants to increase business and profitability without adding staff.”
